Open on YouTube

A PBS Space Time episode on how the Higgs mechanism gives particles mass, prompted by Fermilab's heavier-than-expected W boson measurement. It goes beyond the usual pop-science treatment without heavy math.

Why Hacker News recommends it

HN recommends it as the best non-mathematical explanation of the Higgs field, deep but accessible to lay viewers.

PBS Spacetime has a fantastic video on the Higgs Field that explains it about one level deeper that typical pop science, and answers some of the questions I'm seeing in this thread, include "why did the field switch on suddenly?" and "Why is the Higgs Field different from other fields" link: ▶ this video

Just to add a couple more good Higgs resources courtesy of the fine folks at PBS Space Time: How the Higgs Mechanism Give Things Mass - ▶ this video Could the Higgs Boson Lead Us to Dark Matter? - [link] Where Is The Center of The Universe? - [link] (For me personally, I gave a massive sad sign when I saw this on the homepage. I really liked him a lot for a few reasons: He did his thinking in isolation, for a long period of time walking around the Scottish highlands . He was a keen disciple of interdisciplinary thought being pivotal to innovation. He appears to have imagined things and thought about things in a pretty weird way for his time, although that might seem obvious, how well he grappled with the reality of weirdness is exemplary. 힝)

Since you said 'not too math-intensive', I figure you're fine with getting more details and background than usual just without having to parse equations, in which case PBS Space Time is great: ▶ this video

> the quality has definitely gone downhill lately. I can't agree. This video from a few weeks ago about the W Boson mass discrepancy is about as deep as a lay audience can hope to surmount: ▶ this video

As I understand it, Boson makes particles behave as if they had mass. Gravity doesn't work on things without mass (or pretend mass) so Boson is critical to gravity's behavior? Related PBS Space Time ▶ this video
