When you posted about joining Oxide I couldn't quite figure out what they (now you) do by looking at the homepage. I stumbled across this other lecture ( ▶ this video ) that is along the same line of thinking, and it started to make sense.

I recommend watching the Turing Award speech by Patterson and Hennessey which covers this topic. Spoiler: the way out is "Domain Specific Architectures". ▶ this video

They are. Patterson & Hennessy at their Turing Award lecture back in 2017, when they started talking about where future opportunities for increased speed were going to come from, the very first thing they took a (polite) dump on was how software was written very inefficiently: ▶ this video The old canard that programmer time was worth more than processing time that bad coders quote is less and less true by the year; SWEs who are able to wring better performance out of less hardware resources are going to become more valuable in the future.

Interesting off-the-cuff comments[1] about quantum computing in the question period: Patterson: You may get a question "Won't quantum computing ..." — No! Quantum computing is a really exciting; it's not going to happen tomorrow. Hennessy: It's about on the same time-scale as fusion design. [1] ▶ this video
