This myth was disproven by Andong on YouTube. He found a NYTimes article from 1975 about sushi in Japan that included salmon. Watch here: ▶ this video Edit: Andong also specifically talks about the Nichirei deal.

Salmon for sushi seems not to be the famous story that was going around. Like, it has all the tenets of a nice fake story, talking about Japan and how a foreign more familiar power outsmarted them, but apparently salmon was popular way before Norway theoretically started marketing it: ▶ this video

>How The Desperate Norwegian Salmon Industry Created A Sushi Staple This is slightly misleading. Salmon sushi in japan might not have been a thing prior to norway's marketing campaign, but there's plenty of evidence of salmon sushi being a thing outside of japan[1] and being at least somewhat popular. You could argue that if it weren't for acceptance in japan it wouldn't have been a "staple", but that seems a bit tenuous when it was already on magazine covers. [1] ▶ this video

I'm not sure who to trust here. This video says that the Norwegian sushi story is a bit of a myth, or over stated due to poor journalism. ▶ this video But he definitely has evidence of salmon sushi being eaten before the Norwegians claim to have invented it.
